Zbigniew Religa

Zbigniew Religa (December 16, 1938 – March 8, 2009) was a prominent Polish cardiac surgeon and politician. He was a pioneer in human heart transplantation and the creator of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, a public medical charity. He also served as the Minister of Health in the Polish government from 2005 to 2007.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Religa was born in Mława, Poland. He graduated from the Medical University of Warsaw in 1963 and completed his PhD in medical sciences in 1973.

Medical career[edit | edit source]

Religa was a pioneer in cardiac surgery in Poland. He performed the first successful heart transplantation in the country in 1985, and the first successful lung and heart transplantation in 1995. He also developed and implemented the Polish network for organ procurement and transplantation, which significantly increased the number of organ transplants performed in Poland.

Political career[edit | edit source]

In addition to his medical career, Religa was also active in politics. He served as the Minister of Health in the Polish government from 2005 to 2007. During his tenure, he implemented several important reforms in the Polish healthcare system.
