ZeniMax Media
ZeniMax Media Inc. was an American video game publisher and media company. Founded in 1999 by Robert A. Altman and Christopher Weaver, it served as the parent company for several subsidiaries that developed or published video games. ZeniMax Media was headquartered in Rockville, Maryland. The company played a significant role in the video game industry, owning several major studios, including Bethesda Softworks, which is well-known for popular series such as The Elder Scrolls and Fallout.
History[edit | edit source]
ZeniMax Media was established in 1999 with the goal of creating a network of companies that could cover a wide range of the video game market. Over the years, it expanded through acquisitions and the establishment of new studios. One of its earliest and most significant acquisitions was Bethesda Softworks in 1999, a move that brought several high-profile gaming franchises under its umbrella.
Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, ZeniMax continued to grow. It acquired other studios such as id Software, the creators of Doom and Quake, in 2009, and Arkane Studios, known for Dishonored and Prey, in 2010. These acquisitions helped ZeniMax Media to diversify its portfolio and strengthen its position in the industry.
Acquisition by Microsoft[edit | edit source]
In September 2020, it was announced that Microsoft would acquire ZeniMax Media for $7.5 billion, a deal that was completed in March 2021. This acquisition was part of Microsoft's strategy to expand its Xbox Game Studios and enhance its Xbox Game Pass subscription service. The deal brought all of ZeniMax's subsidiaries, including Bethesda Softworks, under the Microsoft umbrella, significantly expanding Microsoft's first-party titles and intellectual property portfolio.
