Zuclomiphene citrate
Zuclomiphene citrate is a nonsteroidal isomer of clomiphene citrate, a drug commonly used in fertility treatment. It is one of the two isomers found in clomiphene citrate, the other being enclomiphene.
Chemistry[edit | edit source]
Zuclomiphene citrate is a geometric isomer, meaning it has the same molecular formula as enclomiphene but a different spatial arrangement of atoms. It is a triazine derivative and is classified as a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM).
Pharmacology[edit | edit source]
Zuclomiphene citrate acts as an estrogen antagonist in the hypothalamus, inhibiting the negative feedback of estrogen on gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) production. This leads to an increase in the release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which in turn stimulate the ovaries to produce and release eggs.
Clinical Use[edit | edit source]
Zuclomiphene citrate is used in the treatment of anovulation, a condition where the ovary does not release an oocyte during a menstrual cycle. It is also used in oligospermia, a male fertility issue characterized by a low sperm count.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Potential side effects of zuclomiphene citrate include hot flashes, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, and multiple pregnancies.
