1-Undecanol, also known as undecyl alcohol, is a fatty alcohol with the chemical formula C₁₁H₂₄O. It is a colorless, water-insoluble liquid with a mild, pleasant odor. 1-Undecanol is used in the manufacture of perfumes, flavorings, and as an intermediate in the production of surfactants and lubricants.

Chemical Properties[edit | edit source]

1-Undecanol is a saturated alcohol with a long carbon chain, which contributes to its hydrophobic nature. It has a melting point of approximately 19°C and a boiling point of 243°C. The compound is relatively stable under normal conditions but can undergo oxidation to form undecanoic acid.

Synthesis[edit | edit source]

1-Undecanol can be synthesized through the hydrogenation of undecylenic acid, which is derived from castor oil. Another method involves the Ziegler process, where ethylene is oligomerized to form higher alkanes, which are then oxidized to alcohols.

Applications[edit | edit source]

1-Undecanol is used in various industrial applications:

  • Fragrance Industry: It is used as a component in perfumes due to its pleasant odor.
  • Flavor Industry: It is used as a flavoring agent in food products.
  • Surfactants: It serves as an intermediate in the production of surfactants, which are used in detergents and cleaning products.
  • Lubricants: It is used in the formulation of lubricants due to its long carbon chain, which provides good lubricating properties.

Safety and Handling[edit | edit source]

1-Undecanol is considered to be of low toxicity. However, it should be handled with care, using appropriate personal protective equipment to avoid skin and eye contact. It should be stored in a cool, dry place away from sources of ignition.

Environmental Impact[edit | edit source]

As a fatty alcohol, 1-undecanol is biodegradable and is not expected to persist in the environment. However, its production and use should be managed to minimize any potential environmental impact.
