101 Vagina
101 Vagina is a book and art project by Australian photographer and author Philip Werner. The project aims to break down the stigma and taboo surrounding the female genitalia by presenting a collection of black-and-white photographs of vaginas accompanied by personal stories from the women featured.
Overview[edit | edit source]
The book, published in 2013, features 101 close-up photographs of vaginas, each paired with a story or message from the woman whose vagina is depicted. The stories range from humorous to deeply personal, addressing themes such as body image, sexuality, and personal experiences. The project seeks to promote body positivity and challenge societal norms regarding female genitalia.
Purpose[edit | edit source]
The primary goal of 101 Vagina is to foster a more open and accepting dialogue about the female body. By presenting a diverse range of vaginas and personal narratives, the project aims to normalize the appearance of the vagina and reduce the shame and embarrassment often associated with it. The book also serves as a platform for women to share their experiences and perspectives, contributing to a broader understanding of female sexuality and identity.
Exhibitions[edit | edit source]
In addition to the book, 101 Vagina has been exhibited in various galleries and public spaces. These exhibitions often include large prints of the photographs and excerpts from the accompanying stories. The exhibitions are designed to create a space for open discussion and reflection on the themes presented in the book.
Reception[edit | edit source]
101 Vagina has received mixed reactions from the public and critics. Some praise the project for its bold approach to challenging taboos and promoting body positivity, while others criticize it for being provocative or inappropriate. Despite the controversy, the project has sparked important conversations about female genitalia and body image.
Related Projects[edit | edit source]
Philip Werner has also created similar projects, such as 101 Penis and 101 Breasts, which follow the same format of combining photographs with personal stories to address issues related to male and female bodies.
