11-Ketodihydrotestosterone (11-KDHT), also known as 11-keto-5α-dihydrotestosterone or 11-oxo-5α-dihydrotestosterone, is a steroid hormone that is a derivative of dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It is an active androgen that is primarily involved in the regulation of male secondary sexual characteristics and has a role in certain medical conditions.

Structure and Function[edit | edit source]

11-Ketodihydrotestosterone is a potent androgen that is formed from the metabolism of testosterone and dihydrotestosterone. It is structurally similar to these hormones but features an additional ketone group at the 11th carbon position. This modification significantly alters its biological activity compared to its parent compounds.

The hormone binds to the androgen receptor (AR), where it exerts effects similar to other androgens. These effects include the development and maintenance of male characteristics such as facial hair, deepening of the voice, and increased muscle mass. However, 11-KDHT is unique in its reduced ability to be further metabolized by the enzyme 5α-reductase, which typically converts testosterone into the more potent dihydrotestosterone.

11-Ketodihydrotestosterone is synthesized in the body from dihydrotestosterone through the action of the enzyme 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. This enzyme modifies dihydrotestosterone by adding a keto group at the 11th carbon, a change that affects the hormone's interaction with androgen receptors and other metabolic processes.

The metabolism of 11-KDHT primarily involves reduction and conjugation reactions that make the hormone more water-soluble and allow for its excretion in urine. The liver is the main site of these metabolic processes.

Research into 11-KDHT is ongoing, but it is believed to play a role in certain health conditions. For example, its levels may be altered in diseases that affect hormone balance, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and certain forms of adrenal hyperplasia. Additionally, because of its androgenic activity, 11-KDHT is of interest in the study of conditions like androgenic alopecia (male-pattern baldness) and prostate cancer.
