2-Methyl-1-butanol
2-Methyl-1-butanol (also known as active amyl alcohol) is a chemical compound with the molecular formula C5H12O. It is a colorless liquid that is used in the production of various chemicals and as a solvent in the pharmaceutical industry.

2-Methyl-1-butanol is a secondary alcohol that is butan-1-ol substituted by a methyl group at position 2. It has a role as a solvent, a human metabolite and a mouse metabolite. It is a member of butanols and a secondary alcohol. It is a conjugate acid of a 2-methylbutan-1-olate.

2-Methyl-1-butanol is used as a solvent in the production of varnishes, paints, and resins. It is also used in the manufacture of plastics and rubber. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is used as a solvent for the extraction of certain types of drugs and medications.
Health Effects[edit | edit source]
Exposure to 2-Methyl-1-butanol can cause irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system. Ingestion can lead to nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Long-term exposure can lead to damage to the liver and kidneys.
Safety[edit | edit source]
2-Methyl-1-butanol is flammable and should be kept away from heat, sparks, and open flames. It should be stored in a cool, well-ventilated area. In case of skin or eye contact, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice.
