The 2020 G20 Riyadh Summit was the fifteenth meeting of the Group of Twenty (G20) held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on November 21-22, 2020. The summit was originally scheduled to be an in-person event, but due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it was held virtually.

Background[edit | edit source]

The G20 is an international forum for the governments and central bank governors from 19 countries and the European Union. It was established in 1999 in response to the financial crises of the late 1990s. The G20 members represent around 85% of global gross domestic product and two-thirds of the world's population.

Agenda[edit | edit source]

The 2020 G20 Riyadh Summit focused on addressing the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the global economy. Key topics discussed included economic recovery, healthcare responses, and ensuring access to vaccines for all countries. Leaders also discussed climate change, trade, and digitalization.

Outcomes[edit | edit source]

At the conclusion of the summit, the G20 leaders issued a declaration reaffirming their commitment to working together to address the challenges facing the world. They pledged to support the global economic recovery, enhance international cooperation on healthcare, and promote sustainable development.

Criticism[edit | edit source]

The 2020 G20 Riyadh Summit faced criticism from human rights organizations and activists due to Saudi Arabia's human rights record. Critics argued that holding the summit in Riyadh legitimized the Saudi government despite its human rights abuses.
