20th century (cocktail)
20th Century (cocktail)
The 20th Century is a classic cocktail that was created in the early part of the 20th century. It is a blend of gin, lillet blanc, light creme de cacao, and lemon juice. The cocktail is named after the 20th Century Limited train, which was an express passenger train on the New York Central Railroad from 1902 to 1967.
History[edit | edit source]
The 20th Century cocktail was first published in 1937 in the Cafe Royal Cocktail Book by William J Tarling. The cocktail was named after the 20th Century Limited, a luxury train that ran between New York City and Chicago from 1902 to 1967. The train was known for its high level of service and luxury, and the cocktail is said to reflect this elegance and sophistication.
Ingredients[edit | edit source]
The 20th Century cocktail is made with the following ingredients:
- 1.5 oz gin
- 0.75 oz lillet blanc
- 0.75 oz light creme de cacao
- 0.75 oz lemon juice
Preparation[edit | edit source]
To prepare the 20th Century cocktail, all the ingredients are combined in a cocktail shaker with ice. The mixture is then shaken until well chilled and strained into a chilled cocktail glass. The cocktail is traditionally garnished with a lemon twist.
Variations[edit | edit source]
There are several variations of the 20th Century cocktail, including the 21st Century, which substitutes tequila for gin, and the 19th Century, which substitutes bourbon for gin.
