3-Mercaptopropane-1,2-diol can be synthesized through the reaction of propylene oxide with hydrogen sulfide in the presence of a base. The reaction proceeds through a nucleophilic substitution mechanism, with the hydrogen sulfide acting as the nucleophile.

Due to its reducing properties, 3-Mercaptopropane-1,2-diol is used in the synthesis of other chemicals. It can also act as a chelating agent, binding to metals and preventing them from participating in unwanted reactions.
