7-Oxo-DHEA
7-Oxo-DHEA, also known as 7-Keto-DHEA, is a steroid produced by metabolism of the prohormone Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). It is often used as a dietary supplement.
Production and Metabolism[edit | edit source]
7-Oxo-DHEA is produced in the adrenal glands from DHEA. This conversion involves the enzyme 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11β-HSD1). Once produced, 7-Oxo-DHEA can be further metabolized into other compounds, including 7β-hydroxy-DHEA and 7-ketocholesterol.
Uses[edit | edit source]
7-Oxo-DHEA is often used as a dietary supplement with claims that it can improve immune function, decrease muscle loss, increase metabolism, and aid in weight loss. However, these claims are not universally accepted and the supplement is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for any medical use.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Potential side effects of 7-Oxo-DHEA supplementation include hair loss, heart palpitations, and fatigue. Long-term effects are not well-studied.
Research[edit | edit source]
Research on 7-Oxo-DHEA is ongoing, with some studies suggesting potential benefits in areas such as aging, cognitive function, and immune response. However, more research is needed to confirm these findings and understand the mechanisms involved.
