A.G. Barr plc is a British soft drinks manufacturer, best known for producing the iconic Scottish drink, Irn-Bru. Founded in 1875 by Robert Barr in Falkirk, Scotland, the company has grown to become one of the largest soft drink manufacturers in the UK. The company's headquarters are now located in Cumbernauld, Scotland, after moving from their original Falkirk location.

History[edit | edit source]

The origins of A.G. Barr date back to 1875 when Robert Barr embarked on the soft drink business in Falkirk. In 1887, his son, Robert Fulton Barr, started the Glasgow branch of the company, which was later managed by Andrew Greig Barr, giving the company its present name, A.G. Barr. The most notable product of A.G. Barr, Irn-Bru, was first produced in 1901, originally named "Strachan’s Brew". It was later rebranded as "IRON BREW" in 1946 and finally to its phonetic spelling "Irn-Bru" in 1947 due to branding regulations.

Products[edit | edit source]

A.G. Barr produces a variety of soft drinks besides Irn-Bru, including Rubicon – a range of exotic fruit drinks, Tizer, and Barr – a range of flavored carbonated beverages. The company has also expanded its product line to include energy drinks, water, and other non-alcoholic beverages.

Operations[edit | edit source]

A.G. Barr operates primarily in the UK, with its products being distributed across the country. The company has manufacturing sites in Cumbernauld and Milton Keynes, with a distribution network that ensures wide availability of its products. A.G. Barr has also made efforts to expand internationally, with a focus on markets in Russia, Australia, and parts of Africa.

Sustainability[edit | edit source]

A.G. Barr is committed to sustainability, focusing on reducing its environmental impact through various initiatives. These include reducing waste, improving packaging sustainability, and minimizing carbon emissions. The company has set ambitious targets to achieve these goals, aligning with broader industry and global efforts to combat environmental challenges.

Controversies[edit | edit source]

Over the years, A.G. Barr has faced its share of controversies, particularly concerning the health implications of its flagship product, Irn-Bru, due to its high sugar content. In response to changing consumer preferences and regulatory pressures, the company reformulated Irn-Bru in 2018, reducing the sugar content significantly. This decision was met with mixed reactions from the public and media.
