A. A. Ames (1842–1911) was an American physician and politician who served as the mayor of Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is most notably remembered for his involvement in one of the most notorious political corruption scandals in the city's history.

A. A. Ames was born in 1842 in Garden Prairie, Illinois. He pursued a career in medicine, graduating from the Rush Medical College in Chicago, Illinois.

Medical Career[edit | edit source]

After completing his medical education, Ames moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he established a successful medical practice. He became a well-known figure in the community, both for his medical expertise and his involvement in local politics.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Ames entered politics as a member of the Democratic Party. He was elected mayor of Minneapolis four times, serving non-consecutive terms in 1876, 1882, 1886, and 1900. His tenure as mayor was marked by significant controversy and allegations of corruption.

Corruption Scandal[edit | edit source]

During his fourth term as mayor, Ames was implicated in a major corruption scandal. It was alleged that he had created a network of graft and bribery involving the police force and other city officials. This scandal, often referred to as the "Ames Scandal," led to his eventual downfall and tarnished his legacy.

After leaving office, Ames continued to practice medicine in Minneapolis. He passed away in 1911.
