AK002
AK002 is an investigational drug developed by Allakos Inc., a biotechnology company focused on developing therapies for diseases with high unmet medical need. AK002 is a monoclonal antibody that targets Siglec-8, a cell surface protein found on certain types of white blood cells, including eosinophils and mast cells, which are known to play a role in several diseases.
Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]
Siglec-8 is a cell surface protein found on eosinophils and mast cells. When AK002 binds to Siglec-8, it triggers a process called apoptosis, or programmed cell death, in these cells. This reduces the number of eosinophils and mast cells in the body, which can help to alleviate symptoms in diseases where these cells are overactive or overly abundant.
Clinical Trials[edit | edit source]
AK002 has been studied in several clinical trials for diseases including eosinophilic gastritis, eosinophilic gastroenteritis, severe allergic conjunctivitis, and indolent systemic mastocytosis. In these trials, AK002 has shown promise in reducing symptoms and improving quality of life for patients.
Potential Applications[edit | edit source]
Due to its mechanism of action, AK002 has potential applications in a wide range of diseases where eosinophils and mast cells play a role. This includes allergic diseases, certain gastrointestinal diseases, and some types of cancer.
Safety and Side Effects[edit | edit source]
As with any drug, AK002 has potential side effects. In clinical trials, the most common side effects were headache, gastrointestinal symptoms, and infusion reactions. However, these were generally mild and manageable.
Future Directions[edit | edit source]
Further research is needed to fully understand the potential of AK002 in treating various diseases. Allakos Inc. is currently conducting additional clinical trials to further evaluate the safety and efficacy of this drug.
