ALCO Stores, Inc. was an American retail chain that operated a variety of discount stores across the United States. The company was founded in 1901 by Alva Lease Duckwall in Abilene, Kansas. Initially, the stores were known as Duckwall's variety stores, but they later expanded and rebranded as ALCO Stores.

History

ALCO Stores began as a single variety store in Abilene, Kansas. The founder, Alva Lease Duckwall, aimed to provide affordable goods to rural communities. Over the years, the company expanded its operations, opening new stores in small towns and rural areas across the United States. By the mid-20th century, the company had grown significantly and decided to rebrand its larger stores as ALCO Stores, while the smaller variety stores continued to operate under the Duckwall name.

In 1989, the company went public and was listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange under the ticker symbol "DUCK." The company continued to expand throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, reaching its peak with over 200 stores in 23 states.

ALCO Stores offered a wide range of products, including clothing, household goods, electronics, toys, hardware, and groceries. The stores were known for their competitive pricing and aimed to serve the needs of rural and small-town customers who had limited access to larger retail chains.

Financial Struggles and Bankruptcy

In 2014, ALCO Stores filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The company attempted to restructure its operations but was ultimately unable to recover. In early 2015, ALCO Stores announced that it would be closing all of its remaining locations.

Legacy

Although ALCO Stores is no longer in operation, it played a significant role in providing affordable goods to rural communities for over a century. The company's history reflects the challenges faced by small-town retailers in an increasingly competitive market dominated by large national chains.
