AOC2
AOC2 (Amine Oxidase, Copper Containing 2) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the AOC2 gene. This protein is part of the amine oxidase family and is involved in the catabolism of biogenic amines in the human body, including serotonin, dopamine, and polyamines.
Function[edit | edit source]
The AOC2 protein is a copper-containing amine oxidase, which is one of several enzymes that degrade biogenic amines. Biogenic amines are organic compounds derived from amino acids that have roles as neurotransmitters and hormones. The AOC2 protein specifically catalyzes the oxidative deamination of primary amines to produce aldehydes, ammonia, and hydrogen peroxide.
Clinical significance[edit | edit source]
Mutations in the AOC2 gene have been associated with certain medical conditions. For example, a deficiency in AOC2 has been linked to hyperphenylalaninemia, a metabolic disorder characterized by an excess of the amino acid phenylalanine in the blood.
