- Abernathy was established in 1909 as a stop on the Santa Fe Railroad. The city was named after Marion Monroe Abernathy, a vice president of the Texas Land Company, which was responsible for early town development.

- Abernathy is located at the intersection of Interstate 27 and Farm to Market Road 597. It is 17 miles north of Lubbock and 45 miles south of Plainview.
