Absinthium
(absinth' -e-um) [L.]. Wormwood.
The leaves and tops of Artemisia absinthium.
Absinthium contains a volatile oil and an in- tensely bitter principle, absinthin, C 20 H 28 O 4 , which is a narcotic poison. Absinthium in- creases cardiac action and produces tremor and epileptiform convulsions. Dose 20-40 gr.
(1.3-2.6 Gm.) in infusion. It is used as a stom- achic tonic. Unof. Absinthe, a French liqueur, is an alcoholic solution of the oil exhibited with oils of anise, marjoram, and other aromatic oils.
