Accipitrimorphae
Accipitrimorphae is a clade within the class Aves, or birds. This group includes the orders Accipitriformes and Cathartiformes, which comprise birds of prey such as hawks, eagles, vultures, and their relatives.
Taxonomy[edit | edit source]
The Accipitrimorphae clade was proposed in 2014 by the International Ornithological Congress (IOC) based on genetic studies. The clade is part of the larger group Australaves, which also includes the orders Cariamiformes, Falconiformes, and Psittaciformes.
The Accipitrimorphae clade is divided into two orders:
- Order Accipitriformes: This order includes around 240 species of hawks, eagles, kites, harriers, and Old World vultures. These birds are characterized by their sharp, hooked beaks and strong talons, which they use for catching and killing prey.
- Order Cathartiformes: This order includes the New World vultures, such as the turkey vulture and the Andean condor. Unlike the Accipitriformes, these birds are primarily scavengers, feeding on carrion rather than hunting live prey.
Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Birds in the Accipitrimorphae clade are generally large, with strong, hooked beaks and sharp talons. They have excellent vision, which they use to spot prey from a distance. Most species are carnivorous, feeding on a variety of animals including mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish. However, some species, particularly the vultures, are scavengers, feeding primarily on carrion.
Distribution and habitat[edit | edit source]
Accipitrimorphae birds are found worldwide, in a variety of habitats ranging from deserts to forests to mountains. They are typically found in open areas where they can easily spot and catch prey.
Conservation[edit | edit source]
Many species within the Accipitrimorphae clade are threatened by habitat loss, pollution, and hunting. Conservation efforts are underway to protect these species and their habitats.
