Acer negundo

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Acer negundo is a species of maple native to North America. In various regions, it is commonly known as box elder, boxelder maple, ash-leaved maple, and maple ash. The Latin name, Acer negundo, is derived from acer meaning "sharp" in reference to the characteristic points on leaf lobes, and negundo which is the name for a genus of flowering plants in the family Vitaceae that have similar leaf patterns.

Description[edit | edit source]

Acer negundo is a fast-growing and fairly short-lived tree that grows up to 10–25 meters (35–80 ft) tall, with a trunk diameter of 30–50 centimeters (12–20 in). The shoots are green, often with a whitish to pink or violet waxy coating when young. Unlike most other maples (which usually have simple, palmately lobed leaves), Acer negundo has pinnately compound leaves that usually have three to seven leaflets.

Distribution and habitat[edit | edit source]

Acer negundo is a highly adaptable tree, able to grow in a variety of geographic and climatic conditions. It is native to the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and has been introduced to other regions around the world. It is often found in riparian and disturbed habitats.

Uses[edit | edit source]

The wood of Acer negundo is soft and has been used for various purposes including fuel, pulp, and even boxes. The tree's fast growth and adaptability to a range of soils and climates makes it a popular choice for quick shade and erosion control.

Cultivation[edit | edit source]

Acer negundo is a popular ornamental tree due to its fast growth and tolerance of urban conditions. However, it can be invasive and is often considered a weed tree.

Conservation[edit | edit source]

While Acer negundo is not currently considered threatened, it is susceptible to a number of pests and diseases, including the boxelder bug and various types of fungi.
