Activated protein C–protein C inhibitor

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Activated protein C (APC) is a naturally occurring protein that plays an important role in the regulation of blood clotting. APC acts by inactivating certain clotting factors, which helps to prevent the formation of unwanted blood clots. Protein C inhibitor (PCI) is a protein that binds to and inactivates APC, preventing it from performing its normal function. The balance between APC and PCI is critical for maintaining normal blood clotting. When this balance is disrupted, it can lead to conditions such as thrombosis (blood clots) or bleeding disorders.
