Adrenorphin
Adrenorphin, also known as Met-enkephalin-Arg-Phe, is an endogenous, potent opioid peptide. It is produced in the adrenal gland after stress or pain. Adrenorphin has a high affinity for mu-opioid receptors, where it acts as an agonist.
Structure and Function[edit | edit source]
Adrenorphin is a heptapeptide, meaning it is composed of seven amino acids. Its sequence is Met-Enk-Arg-Phe, which is short for Methionine-Enkephalin-Arginine-Phenylalanine.
The peptide is involved in the body's response to stress and pain. It is released from the adrenal gland in response to these stimuli, and then binds to mu-opioid receptors in the brain. This binding triggers a cascade of events that ultimately leads to the reduction of pain perception.
Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]
Due to its potent opioid activity, adrenorphin has been studied for its potential use in pain management. However, its use is limited by its short half-life and the risk of developing tolerance and dependence.
