Adult adhd

Adult ADHD or Adult Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is a mental health disorder that includes a combination of persistent problems, such as difficulty paying attention, hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior. Adult ADHD can lead to unstable relationships, poor work or school performance, low self-esteem, and other problems.

Symptoms

Adult ADHD symptoms may not be as clear as ADHD symptoms in children. In adults, hyperactivity may decrease, but struggles with impulsiveness, restlessness and difficulty paying attention may continue.

Inattention

Adults with ADHD are often forgetful and easily distracted. They have difficulty with organization, focusing, and completing tasks. They may also have problems following detailed instructions.

Hyperactivity

While adults with ADHD may feel restless, they do not exhibit the same hyperactivity that children do. They may display symptoms such as an inability to relax, talking excessively, or being constantly on the move.

Impulsivity

Adults with ADHD may exhibit impulsive behavior, such as impatience, having a hard time waiting to talk or react, taking risks in activities, often without thinking before acting.

Causes

The exact cause of adult ADHD isn't known, but it is likely that genetics play a role. Other factors that may contribute include brain injuries, exposure to environmental (e.g., lead) during pregnancy or at a young age, alcohol and tobacco use during pregnancy, premature delivery, and low birth weight.

Diagnosis

Diagnosing ADHD in adults can be difficult because certain ADHD symptoms are similar to those caused by other conditions, such as anxiety or mood disorders. And many adults with ADHD also have at least one other mental health condition, such as depression or anxiety.

Treatment

Treatment for adult ADHD is similar to treatment for childhood ADHD, and includes stimulant drugs, other medications, psychological counseling (psychotherapy), and treatment for any mental health conditions that occur along with adult ADHD.
