Black hebrews Dimona people

African Hebrew Israelites in Israel are a group of African Americans who identify as descendants of the ancient Israelites and have established a community in Israel. This group is also known as the African Hebrew Israelites of Jerusalem or simply the Black Hebrews.

History[edit | edit source]

The movement began in the United States during the 1960s, a period marked by the Civil Rights Movement and a growing interest in African American identity and heritage. The founder, Ben Ammi Ben-Israel, claimed to have received a vision in 1966 instructing him to lead his followers to the Holy Land. In 1969, the first group of African Hebrew Israelites arrived in Israel and settled in the desert town of Dimona.

Beliefs and Practices[edit | edit source]

The African Hebrew Israelites adhere to a form of Hebrew Israelite belief, which includes the observance of Sabbath, dietary laws similar to Kashrut, and the celebration of biblical festivals. They believe they are the true descendants of the ancient Israelites and follow a lifestyle that emphasizes health, community, and spirituality.

Community Life[edit | edit source]

The community in Dimona, known as the Village of Peace, is self-sustaining and operates various businesses, including organic farms, vegan restaurants, and a clothing line. They place a strong emphasis on education, healthcare, and social welfare. The community is known for its vegan diet and holistic health practices.

Legal Status[edit | edit source]

Initially, the African Hebrew Israelites faced challenges regarding their legal status in Israel. Over the years, they have negotiated with the Israeli government to obtain permanent residency and citizenship for many of their members. The community has also established positive relations with local authorities and other communities in Israel.

Cultural Impact[edit | edit source]

The African Hebrew Israelites have contributed to the cultural diversity of Israel. They have participated in various cultural and social events, promoting their unique heritage and traditions. Their presence has also sparked discussions on issues of race, identity, and religion in Israel.
