Ais kacang

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Ais kacang (also known as air batu campur or ABC) is a popular dessert in Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei. It is also found in regions of Indonesia and is often sold by street vendors or in local hawker centres.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Ais kacang, which translates to "bean ice", is traditionally made with shaved ice, red beans, and a variety of other toppings. The dessert is known for its colourful appearance and the mix of different textures and flavours. The base of the dessert is made up of jelly, red beans, sweet corn, and attap chee (palm seed). This is then topped with a mound of shaved ice, coloured syrups, and condensed milk.

History[edit | edit source]

The origins of ais kacang are not well-documented, but it is believed to have evolved from a simple shaved ice dessert during the British colonial era in Malaysia. The dessert was originally served with only a few ingredients, such as red beans and clear syrup. Over time, vendors began adding more ingredients to make the dessert more appealing and flavourful.

Variations[edit | edit source]

There are many variations of ais kacang in different regions. In some parts of Malaysia, it is common to add fruit cocktails, lychees, or ice cream to the dessert. In Singapore, ais kacang is often served with colourful jellies and a scoop of durian ice cream.

Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]

Ais kacang is a popular choice for cooling down in the hot and humid weather of Southeast Asia. It is also a common dessert during festive occasions and celebrations. Despite the introduction of Western desserts, ais kacang remains a favourite among locals and tourists alike for its unique taste and presentation.
