Akbar mohammadi

Akbar Mohammadi was an Iranian student and political activist who became widely known for his involvement in the Iranian student protests of July 1999. He was born in 1972 in Amol, a city in the Mazandaran Province of Iran. Mohammadi was a student at the University of Tehran when he became actively involved in the protests.

Background[edit | edit source]

The Iranian student protests of July 1999 were a series of demonstrations that erupted in response to the closure of the reformist newspaper Salam. The protests quickly escalated into a broader movement against the government, calling for greater political freedoms and reforms. Mohammadi was one of the many students who participated in these protests.

Arrest and Imprisonment[edit | edit source]

During the protests, Mohammadi was arrested by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and was subsequently subjected to severe torture and ill-treatment. He was initially sentenced to death, but his sentence was later commuted to 15 years in prison following international outcry and pressure from human rights organizations.

Health and Death[edit | edit source]

While in prison, Mohammadi's health deteriorated significantly due to the harsh conditions and lack of medical care. Despite numerous appeals for his release on medical grounds, he remained incarcerated. On July 30, 2006, Akbar Mohammadi died in Evin Prison under suspicious circumstances, which many believe were a result of the torture and neglect he endured.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Mohammadi's death drew significant attention to the plight of political prisoners in Iran and highlighted the ongoing struggle for human rights and political freedoms in the country. His story remains a symbol of resistance against oppression and has inspired many activists both within Iran and internationally.
