Qadr night in Imam Reza Shrine

Al-Qadr (Arabic: سورة القدر

) is the 97th chapter (surah) of the Quran, with 5 verses (ayah). It is a Meccan surah, which means it was revealed in Mecca. The chapter is named after the Night of Decree (Laylat al-Qadr), which is considered to be the night when the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.

Content[edit | edit source]

The surah emphasizes the significance of the Night of Decree, which is described as better than a thousand months. It is during this night that the angels and the Spirit (Jibril) descend by the permission of their Lord with all decrees. The night is characterized by peace until the break of dawn.

Text and Translation[edit | edit source]

The text of Al-Qadr in Arabic and its translation in English is as follows:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

1. Indeed, We sent the Qur'an down during the Night of Decree.

2. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree?

3. The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.

4. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter.

5. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.

Significance[edit | edit source]

The Night of Decree is considered one of the holiest nights in the Islamic calendar. It is believed that prayers made on this night are particularly powerful, and it is a time for seeking forgiveness and making supplications. The exact date of Laylat al-Qadr is not known, but it is traditionally observed on one of the last ten nights of Ramadan, often on the 27th night.

Themes[edit | edit source]

The primary themes of Al-Qadr include the importance of the Quran, the significance of divine revelation, and the special status of the Night of Decree. The surah also highlights the role of angels in delivering divine decrees and the concept of peace and tranquility associated with this sacred night.
