Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin (born 24 September 1957) is a Ghanaian politician who has served as the Speaker of the Parliament of Ghana since 7 January 2021. He is a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and has been a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics for several decades.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Alban Bagbin was born in Sombo, a town in the Upper West Region of Ghana. He attended the Wa Secondary School and later proceeded to the University of Ghana, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Law and English. He furthered his education at the Ghana School of Law and was called to the bar in 1982.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Bagbin's political career began in earnest when he was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Nadowli-Kaleo Constituency in 1992. He has since been re-elected multiple times, serving in various capacities within the Parliament of Ghana.

Ministerial Positions[edit | edit source]

Throughout his career, Bagbin has held several ministerial positions. He served as the Minister for Health from 2012 to 2013 under President John Dramani Mahama. During his tenure, he was instrumental in implementing various health policies and reforms.

Speaker of Parliament[edit | edit source]

In January 2021, Bagbin was elected as the Speaker of the Parliament of Ghana, succeeding Aaron Mike Oquaye. His election marked a significant milestone as he became the first Speaker from the opposition party in Ghana's history.
