Albemarle County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 112,395. Its county seat is Charlottesville, which is an independent city surrounded by the county. The county is part of the Charlottesville metropolitan area.

History

Albemarle County was created in 1744 from the western portion of Goochland County. It was named in honor of Willem Anne van Keppel, 2nd Earl of Albemarle, who was the governor of the Virginia Colony at the time. The county has a rich history, including being the home of Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States and the principal author of the Declaration of Independence.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 726 square miles (1,880 km²), of which 721 square miles (1,870 km²) is land and 5 square miles (13 km²) (0.7%) is water. The county is located in the central part of Virginia and is characterized by its rolling hills and the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west.

Demographics

As of the 2020 census, there were 112,395 people, 42,122 households, and 27,235 families residing in the county. The population density was 156 people per square mile (60/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 79.1% White, 9.7% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 4.8% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.8% from other races, and 3.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.5% of the population.

Government and Politics

Albemarle County is governed by a six-member Board of Supervisors, each elected from one of the county's magisterial districts. The county is known for its progressive politics and has consistently supported Democratic candidates in recent national elections.

Education

The county is served by Albemarle County Public Schools, which operates several elementary, middle, and high schools. The county is also home to the University of Virginia, a major public research university founded by Thomas Jefferson.
