Albert Bourla
Albert Bourla is a Greek veterinarian and the CEO of Pfizer, a multinational pharmaceutical company. He was born on October 21, 1961, in Thessaloniki, Greece. Bourla has been with Pfizer since 1993 and has held several executive roles within the company before becoming CEO in 2019.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Bourla was born and raised in Thessaloniki, Greece. His parents were Jewish survivors of the Holocaust. He received his PhD in Veterinary Medicine from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and later obtained a degree in Reproduction Biotechnology from the Veterinary School of Aristotle University.
Career at Pfizer[edit | edit source]
Bourla joined Pfizer in 1993 as a Technical Director of Veterinary Medicine in Greece. He moved through various positions within the company, including serving as the Group President of Pfizer's Global Vaccines, Oncology, and Consumer Healthcare business. In 2018, he was appointed as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Pfizer, and in 2019, he succeeded Ian Read as CEO.
Under Bourla's leadership, Pfizer developed the COVID-19 vaccine in partnership with BioNTech, a German biotechnology company. The vaccine was the first to receive Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Bourla is married and has two children. He is a strong advocate for science and innovation, and has spoken publicly about the importance of vaccines in combating diseases like COVID-19.
