Alcohol proof
Alcohol proof is a measure of the content of ethanol (alcohol) in an alcoholic beverage. The term was originally used in the United Kingdom and was defined as 12/13 times the alcohol by volume (ABV). However, in the United States, alcohol proof is defined as twice the percentage of ABV.

The concept of alcohol proof dates back to the 16th century when spirits were taxed at different rates depending on their alcohol content. To test the alcohol content, a pellet of gunpowder would be soaked in the spirit. If the wet gunpowder could still burn, the spirit was rated above "proof" and taxed at a higher rate. The term "proof" stems from this practice, as it was a "proof" of high alcohol content.
Measurement[edit | edit source]
In the United States, the system of alcohol proof is straightforward: it is twice the ABV. For example, a spirit with 50% alcohol by volume is 100 proof. This system was adopted in 1848 and is still in use today.
In the United Kingdom, the system was more complicated and was based on the specific gravity of the spirit relative to water. However, this system was replaced in 1980 by the European Union's system, which uses ABV exclusively.

Different countries have adopted different standards for measuring alcohol content. While the United States uses the proof system, most countries, including those in the European Union, use the ABV system. ABV is expressed as a percentage of total volume that is alcohol.
