Glenny's most notable contribution to medicine was his work on the diphtheria toxoid vaccine. In the early 20th century, diphtheria was a major cause of illness and death among children. Glenny, along with his colleagues, developed a method to inactivate the diphtheria toxin using formaldehyde, creating a safe and effective vaccine. This work laid the foundation for the widespread use of toxoid vaccines.

Other contributions[edit | edit source]

In addition to his work on diphtheria, Glenny made significant contributions to the understanding of immunological memory and the adjuvant effect. He was one of the first to describe the phenomenon of adjuvants, substances that enhance the body's immune response to an antigen. His research in this area helped to improve the efficacy of vaccines.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Glenny's work has had a profound impact on public health, leading to the near eradication of diphtheria in many parts of the world. His research on adjuvants continues to influence vaccine development today. Glenny's dedication to immunology and his innovative approach to vaccine development have earned him a place among the most respected figures in medical research.
