Alexander Shaler (March 19, 1827 – December 28, 1911) was a Union Army general during the American Civil War. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Chancellorsville.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Alexander Shaler was born in Haddam, Connecticut. He pursued a career in the military and became involved in the New York State Militia before the outbreak of the Civil War.

Civil War Service[edit | edit source]

At the start of the American Civil War, Shaler was commissioned as a colonel in the 65th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He quickly rose through the ranks due to his leadership and bravery.

Battle of Chancellorsville[edit | edit source]

During the Battle of Chancellorsville in May 1863, Shaler led a successful counterattack against Confederate forces. His actions during this battle earned him the Medal of Honor.

Later Service[edit | edit source]

Shaler continued to serve with distinction throughout the war. He was promoted to brigadier general and later to major general. He participated in several key battles, including the Battle of Gettysburg and the Siege of Petersburg.

Post-War Career[edit | edit source]

After the war, Shaler returned to New York and resumed his involvement with the New York State Militia. He also served as the Commissioner of the New York City Fire Department and was active in various veterans' organizations.

Death and Legacy[edit | edit source]

Alexander Shaler died on December 28, 1911, in Ridgefield, Connecticut. He is remembered for his military service and contributions to the state militia and fire department.
