Alexander Thomas Augusta

Alexander Thomas Augusta (March 8, 1825 – December 21, 1890) was a pioneering African American physician, surgeon, and educator. He was the highest-ranking black officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War and the first African American to be appointed to a medical faculty in the United States.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Alexander Thomas Augusta was born to free African American parents in Norfolk, Virginia. Despite the significant racial barriers of the time, he pursued an education in medicine. He initially studied at the University of Toronto in Canada, where he earned his medical degree in 1856.

Medical Career[edit | edit source]

After completing his education, Augusta established a successful medical practice in Toronto. He later returned to the United States and offered his services to the Union Army during the American Civil War. In 1863, he was commissioned as a major and surgeon, making him the highest-ranking African American officer in the Union Army.

Civil War Service[edit | edit source]

During the Civil War, Augusta served as the surgeon-in-charge at the Freedmen's Hospital in Washington, D.C. He also served at the Contraband Hospital, which provided medical care to freed slaves and African American soldiers. His service was marked by his dedication to improving the health and welfare of African Americans during and after the war.

Post-War Contributions[edit | edit source]

After the war, Augusta continued to break barriers. In 1868, he became the first African American to be appointed to the faculty of Howard University, where he taught anatomy. He also worked at the Freedmen's Bureau, providing medical care and assistance to newly freed African Americans.
