Alexandra of Denmark[edit | edit source]

Alexandra of Denmark (1 December 1844 – 20 November 1925) was the wife of King Edward VII and served as Queen Consort of the United Kingdom and the British Empire from 1901 to 1910. Born into the House of Glücksburg, she was the daughter of Christian IX of Denmark and Louise of Hesse-Kassel.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Alexandra was born in the Yellow Palace in Copenhagen, Denmark. She was the eldest daughter of Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg and Princess Louise of Hesse-Kassel. Her father became King Christian IX of Denmark in 1863.

Marriage to Edward VII[edit | edit source]

Alexandra married Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, on 10 March 1863. The marriage was arranged to strengthen ties between the United Kingdom and Denmark.

Queen Consort[edit | edit source]

Upon the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, Alexandra became Queen Consort as her husband ascended the throne as King Edward VII. Her tenure as queen was marked by her popularity and her involvement in various charitable activities.

Alexandra and Edward had six children:

Later Life and Death[edit | edit source]

After the death of Edward VII in 1910, Alexandra became the Queen Mother during the reign of her son, George V. She remained active in public life and continued her charitable work until her death in 1925.
