Denmark (Danish: Danmark), officially the Kingdom of Denmark (Danish: Kongeriget Danmark), is a Nordic country in Northern Europe. It is the southernmost of the Scandinavian countries, lying southwest of Sweden and south of Norway, and bordered to the south by Germany. Denmark consists of a peninsula and an archipelago of 443 named islands, with the largest being Zealand, Funen, and the North Jutlandic Island. The islands are characterized by flat, arable land and sandy coasts, low elevation, and a temperate climate.

The history of Denmark as a unified kingdom began in the 10th century, but historic documents describe the geographic area and the people living there—the Danes—as early as 500 AD. Denmark is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system. The Folketing is the national parliament, and the Prime Minister is the head of government. The current monarch is Queen Margrethe II, and the current Prime Minister is Mette Frederiksen.
