Alfred Mossman "Alf" Landon (September 9, 1887 – October 12, 1987) was an American politician who served as the 26th Governor of Kansas from 1933 to 1937. He was the Republican Party's nominee for President of the United States in the 1936 United States presidential election, but he was defeated by the incumbent, Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Alf Landon was born in West Middlesex, Pennsylvania, to John Manuel Landon and Anne Mossman. His family moved to Kansas when he was a child. Landon attended the University of Kansas, where he earned a degree in law.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Landon began his political career as a progressive Republican. He was elected as the Governor of Kansas in 1932 and re-elected in 1934. As governor, Landon was known for his fiscal conservatism and efforts to balance the state budget during the Great Depression.

1936 Presidential Campaign[edit | edit source]

In 1936, Landon was nominated as the Republican candidate for President. His campaign was marked by his opposition to Roosevelt's New Deal policies, which he believed were too interventionist and detrimental to individual liberties. Despite his efforts, Landon lost the election in a landslide, winning only two states, Maine and Vermont.

Later Life[edit | edit source]

After his defeat in the presidential election, Landon retired from active politics but remained a respected elder statesman within the Republican Party. He continued to speak out on political issues and supported various Republican candidates over the years. Landon lived to be 100 years old, passing away in 1987.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Landon is remembered for his principled stand against the New Deal and his efforts to promote fiscal responsibility. His legacy is also marked by his long life and continued influence in the Republican Party long after his active political career ended.
