Maine
Maine is a U.S. state located in the New England region of the northeastern United States. Known for its jagged, rocky coastline, low, rolling mountains, heavily forested interior, and picturesque waterways, Maine is also recognized for its seafood cuisine, especially lobster and clam dishes.
History[edit | edit source]
Maine's history is rich and complex, beginning with the earliest Native American inhabitants, the Paleo-Indians, who arrived in the region following the retreat of glacial ice over 12,000 years ago. The area was later inhabited by the Wabanaki Confederacy, a coalition of five Algonquian nations. European contact began in the 16th century with explorers such as John Cabot, and the region was later colonized by the English in the 17th century. Maine became the 23rd state of the Union on March 15, 1820, as part of the Missouri Compromise.
Geography[edit | edit source]

The state is bordered by New Hampshire to the west, the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast, and the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Quebec to the northeast and northwest, respectively. Maine's landscape is characterized by its heavily forested interior, picturesque waterways, and complex coastline.
Economy[edit | edit source]
Maine's economy is characterized by traditional activities such as fishing, forestry, and agriculture, as well as modern sectors such as healthcare, education, and tourism. The state is known for its production of lobster, blueberries, and pulp and paper products. In recent years, Maine has seen growth in the technology and renewable energy sectors.
Culture[edit | edit source]
Maine's culture is a blend of the indigenous Wabanaki traditions and the influences of the many waves of settlers who have made the state their home. The state is known for its distinctive New England cuisine, its rich literary tradition, and its vibrant arts scene.
