Quebec

Quebec is the second-most populous province in Canada, and the only one to have a predominantly French-speaking population, with French as the sole provincial official language.

History

Quebec's earliest known inhabitants were Indigenous peoples, specifically the Algonquin, Innu, and Inuit. The first European to reach Quebec was Jacques Cartier, who planted a cross in 1534 on the Gaspé Peninsula. Samuel de Champlain later established the first permanent European settlement, Quebec City, in 1608.

Geography

Quebec is Canada's largest province by area and its second-largest administrative division. It is bordered to the west by the province of Ontario, James Bay, and Hudson Bay; to the north by Hudson Strait and Ungava Bay; to the east by the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador and New Brunswick. It is bordered on the south by the United States.

Economy

Quebec's economy is highly industrialized and diversified. Chief sectors are mining, pulp and paper, manufacturing, and hydroelectricity. Quebec is one of the world's leading producers of hydroelectric power.

Culture

Quebec is known for its culture, which is a blend of its Indigenous, French, and British roots. The province is known for its music, literature, cinema, visual arts, culinary arts, and sports.

Government and politics

Quebec is a federated entity within Canada, and has its own parliament and government. The Premier of Quebec is the head of government, and the Lieutenant Governor of Quebec represents the Canadian Monarch.
