Alfonso, Prince of Asturias (Alfonso Pío Cristino Eduardo Francisco Guillermo Carlos Enrique Eugenio Fernando Antonio Venancio Borbón y Battenberg; 10 May 1907 – 6 September 1938) was the eldest son of Alfonso XIII of Spain and Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg. He was heir apparent to the Spanish throne from his birth until he renounced his rights in 1933.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Alfonso was born on 10 May 1907 at the Royal Palace of Madrid in Madrid, Kingdom of Spain. He was the first child of King Alfonso XIII of Spain and Queen Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg. As the eldest son, he was given the title of Prince of Asturias, traditionally held by the heir apparent to the Spanish throne.
Hemophilia[edit | edit source]
Alfonso, like his younger brother Infante Gonzalo of Spain, inherited hemophilia from his mother, Queen Victoria Eugenie, who was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. This condition significantly affected his life and ultimately contributed to his early death.
Renunciation and Marriage[edit | edit source]
In 1933, Alfonso renounced his rights to the Spanish throne to marry Edelmira Sampedro y Robato, a commoner from Cuba. The marriage took place on 21 June 1933. Following his renunciation, he was given the title of Count of Covadonga.
Later Life and Death[edit | edit source]
Alfonso's marriage to Edelmira ended in divorce in 1937. He later married Marta Esther Rocafort-Altuzarra on 3 July 1937, but this marriage also ended in divorce in early 1938. Alfonso died on 6 September 1938 in Miami, Florida, United States, following a car accident exacerbated by his hemophilia. He was buried in the Cementerio de la Almudena in Madrid, Spain.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Alfonso's life was marked by his struggle with hemophilia and his renunciation of the throne, which had significant implications for the Spanish monarchy. His younger brother, Infante Juan, Count of Barcelona, eventually became the heir apparent after Alfonso's renunciation.
