Algirdas Mykolas Brazauskas (22 September 1932 – 26 June 2010) was a Lithuanian politician and former President of Lithuania. He served as the first President of Lithuania from 1993 to 1998. Brazauskas was a key figure in the country's transition to independence from the Soviet Union.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Brazauskas was born on 22 September 1932 in Rokiškis, Lithuania. He studied civil engineering at the Kaunas University of Technology and later pursued a career in politics.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Brazauskas was a prominent member of the Communist Party of Lithuania during the Soviet era. However, he later became a leading figure in the independence movement and played a crucial role in Lithuania's secession from the Soviet Union in 1990.

After independence, Brazauskas was elected as the first President of Lithuania in 1993. He focused on strengthening Lithuania's economy and fostering closer ties with Western countries. Brazauskas was known for his pragmatic approach to governance and his efforts to modernize the country.

Later Years and Legacy[edit | edit source]

After his presidency, Brazauskas continued to be involved in Lithuanian politics and served as the Prime Minister of Lithuania from 2001 to 2006. He passed away on 26 June 2010, leaving behind a legacy as a key figure in Lithuania's history.
