Aloïse Corbaz

Aloïse Corbaz (1886–1964) was a Swiss artist known for her intricate and colorful drawings. She was born in Lausanne, Switzerland, and spent much of her life in psychiatric institutions. Despite her challenging circumstances, Corbaz created a vast body of work that has been recognized for its unique style and emotional depth.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Corbaz was born in Lausanne in 1886. She began drawing at a young age and showed early talent for art. However, her mental health began to deteriorate in her early twenties, and she was eventually institutionalized at the age of 33. She spent the rest of her life in psychiatric hospitals, where she continued to create art.

Corbaz's drawings are characterized by their intricate detail and vibrant colors. She often depicted fantastical scenes populated by elaborate figures and creatures. Her work is considered to be a form of outsider art, created outside the boundaries of traditional artistic norms.

Despite her confinement, Corbaz's art gained recognition during her lifetime. In 1947, the French artist Jean Dubuffet included her work in his collection of art brut, a term used to describe art created outside the mainstream art world.

Corbaz continued to draw until her death in 1964. Her work has since been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, cementing her legacy as a pioneering artist in the field of outsider art.
