Alpha-isomethyl ionone
Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone is a synthetic compound that is widely used in the cosmetics industry and perfumery. It is known for its sweet, floral scent, which is reminiscent of violet flowers.
Chemical Structure and Properties[edit | edit source]
Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, also known as 3-methyl-4-(2,6,6-trimethyl-2-cyclohexen-1-yl)-3-buten-2-one, is a terpene derivative. It has a molecular formula of C14H22O and a molecular weight of 206.32 g/mol. The compound is a pale yellow liquid at room temperature and has a boiling point of 134-135°C at 10 mmHg.
Production and Use[edit | edit source]
Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone is synthesized from citral, a terpenoid compound found in lemongrass, and acetone. The reaction involves a condensation reaction followed by a cyclization process.
In the cosmetics industry, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone is used as a fragrance ingredient in a variety of products, including perfumes, soaps, and lotions. It is also used in laundry detergents and fabric softeners due to its long-lasting scent.
Safety and Regulations[edit | edit source]
Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone is generally considered safe for use in cosmetics and personal care products. However, it has been identified as a potential allergen by the European Union and is therefore required to be listed on the ingredient labels of products sold in the EU if its concentration exceeds certain levels.
