Alphabet Inc. is an American multinational conglomerate headquartered in Mountain View, California. It was created through a corporate restructuring of Google on October 2, 2015, and became the parent company of Google and several former Google subsidiaries. Alphabet Inc. is designed to allow its businesses to operate independently and to pursue their own distinct goals. The company's portfolio encompasses various industries, including technology, life sciences, investment capital, and research.

History[edit | edit source]

The formation of Alphabet Inc. was announced on August 10, 2015, by Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. The restructuring process turned Google into a subsidiary and shifted other businesses to Alphabet Inc., aiming to make the core Google business "cleaner and more accountable" while allowing greater autonomy to group companies that operate in businesses other than Internet services. Larry Page took the role of CEO of Alphabet, with Sergey Brin as President, and Sundar Pichai was appointed CEO of Google.

Structure[edit | edit source]

Alphabet Inc. operates through two segments: Google and Other Bets. The Google segment includes its main Internet products such as search, ads, maps, YouTube, Android, Chrome, and Google Cloud. 'Other Bets' encompasses a range of businesses, including Verily (life sciences), Waymo (self-driving cars), and Calico (biotech), among others. Each of these subsidiaries operates independently with its own management team.

Business Operations[edit | edit source]

Alphabet Inc. focuses on diversifying its business beyond the core Google services. This includes investments in technology, life sciences, healthcare, and longevity, as well as projects aimed at solving global challenges. Alphabet's Other Bets have been known for their ambitious projects, such as developing smart contact lenses, self-driving technology, and efforts to extend human life.

Financial Performance[edit | edit source]

Alphabet Inc. reports its financial performance on a quarterly and annual basis. The majority of its revenue is generated from advertising through Google's various services. However, Alphabet has been investing in and reporting on the growth of its Other Bets to showcase its commitment to innovation beyond its advertising business.

Corporate Governance[edit | edit source]

Alphabet Inc. is governed by a board of directors, which includes notable figures from various industries. The company has faced scrutiny over its corporate governance practices, particularly concerning the dual-class share structure, which gives disproportionate voting power to its founders.

Challenges and Controversies[edit | edit source]

Alphabet Inc. has faced various challenges and controversies, including antitrust investigations, privacy concerns, and criticism over its handling of sexual harassment claims. These issues have sparked debates about the power and responsibility of large technology companies.

Future Prospects[edit | edit source]

Alphabet Inc. continues to explore new technologies and markets, with a strong focus on artificial intelligence, machine learning, and quantum computing. The company aims to leverage its strengths in technology and innovation to address societal challenges and create value for its stakeholders.
