Altus AVA

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Altus AVA is an American Viticultural Area (AVA) located in the town of Altus, in the Arkansas River Valley region of the state of Arkansas. The AVA encompasses 208 square miles (540 km2) and was established on December 2, 1984.

History[edit | edit source]

The history of the Altus AVA is deeply rooted in the traditions of the Swiss-German immigrants who settled in the area in the late 19th century. These immigrants brought with them a rich heritage of viticulture and winemaking, which they used to establish the first vineyards and wineries in the region.

Geography and Climate[edit | edit source]

The Altus AVA is located in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains, at an elevation of approximately 1,800 feet (550 m) above sea level. The region's climate is characterized by hot, humid summers and mild, wet winters, which are ideal conditions for growing a variety of grape varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Merlot.

Viticulture[edit | edit source]

Viticulture in the Altus AVA is characterized by the use of traditional winemaking techniques, such as hand-harvesting and barrel-aging, as well as modern practices, such as temperature-controlled fermentation. The region's unique terroir, which includes well-drained, loamy soil and a long growing season, contributes to the production of high-quality wines with distinctive flavors and aromas.

Wineries[edit | edit source]

There are several wineries located within the Altus AVA, including Mount Bethel Winery, Post Familie Vineyards, and Wiederkehr Wine Cellars. These wineries produce a wide range of wines, from dry reds and whites to sweet dessert wines, and offer tastings and tours to visitors.
