The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is an international non-profit organization dedicated to advancing science, engineering, and innovation throughout the world for the benefit of all people. Founded in 1848, it is the world's largest general scientific society and the publisher of the journal Science.
History[edit | edit source]
The AAAS was founded on September 20, 1848, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by 78 scientists. The association was established to promote scientific dialogue and collaboration among scientists from different disciplines. The first president of the AAAS was William Charles Redfield, a meteorologist and engineer.
Mission and Goals[edit | edit source]
The mission of the AAAS is to "advance science, engineering, and innovation throughout the world for the benefit of all people." The organization aims to:
- Foster communication among scientists, engineers, and the public.
- Enhance international cooperation in science.
- Promote the responsible conduct of science.
- Increase public understanding and appreciation of science.
- Advocate for science education and science policy.

The AAAS is best known for publishing the prestigious journal Science, which covers a wide range of scientific disciplines. In addition to Science, the AAAS publishes several other journals and periodicals, including Science Advances, Science Immunology, Science Robotics, and Science Translational Medicine.
