ASSP was originally established as the United Association of Casualty Inspectors in 1911. Over the years, it has undergone several name changes, reflecting its evolving role in the safety profession. In 1914, it became the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) to better represent the engineering basis of the profession. In 2018, the society changed its name to the American Society of Safety Professionals to more accurately reflect the diverse disciplines within the safety field.

The organization supports the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification, among others, which is accredited by the Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE). ASSP also publishes Professional Safety, a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to the latest research and developments in occupational safety and health.

Advocacy[edit | edit source]

ASSP plays a key role in advocating for safety and health legislation at both the state and federal levels. The organization works closely with regulatory agencies such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to develop and promote standards that improve workplace safety.

Standards Development[edit | edit source]

ASSP is a recognized leader in the development of voluntary consensus standards that enhance workplace safety and health. These standards cover a wide range of topics, including fall protection, construction safety, and industrial hygiene. ASSP standards are developed by member-led committees and are designed to be practical, comprehensive, and based on the latest scientific research.
