History[edit | edit source]

Amiens has a long and storied history, with evidence of settlement dating back to the Iron Age. The city was known as Samarobriva during the Roman period and served as an important administrative and military center. Throughout the Middle Ages, Amiens grew in prominence, particularly due to its strategic location and its role in the textile industry.

Landmarks[edit | edit source]

Amiens is renowned for its architectural heritage, most notably the Amiens Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cathedral is one of the largest Gothic churches in France and is famous for its impressive facade and intricate sculptures.

Other notable landmarks include the Hortillonnages, a series of floating gardens that can be explored by boat, and the Musée de Picardie, which houses an extensive collection of art and artifacts.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Historically, Amiens was a center for the textile industry, but its economy has diversified over time. Today, the city has a mix of industries, including manufacturing, services, and education. The presence of the University of Picardie Jules Verne contributes significantly to the local economy.
