Amir Attaran
Amir Attaran is a Canadian lawyer, biologist, and professor at the University of Ottawa. He is known for his work in the fields of law, medicine, and public health.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Amir Attaran was born in California, United States. He completed his undergraduate degree in neurobiology at the University of California, Berkeley. He then pursued his Ph.D. in immunology and parasitology from the University of Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. Attaran also holds a Juris Doctor degree from the University of British Columbia.
Career[edit | edit source]
Attaran is currently a Full Professor in both the Faculty of Law and the School of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Ottawa. His work primarily focuses on the intersection of law, medicine, and public health. He has made significant contributions to the understanding of malaria and HIV/AIDS, and has been an advocate for access to antiretroviral therapy in developing countries.
Research and Advocacy[edit | edit source]
Attaran's research has been influential in shaping global health policy. He has been a vocal critic of the World Health Organization's handling of the malaria epidemic, arguing for more effective strategies to combat the disease. He has also advocated for greater transparency in the pharmaceutical industry, particularly in relation to the pricing and availability of essential medicines.

Attaran's work has been recognized with numerous awards and honors. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and was named one of the "Top 40 Under 40" by the Globe and Mail in 2005.
