African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) is a regional peacekeeping mission operated by the African Union with the approval of the United Nations. Established in 2007, AMISOM's primary objective is to support the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia in its efforts to stabilize the country and combat the insurgency led by Al-Shabaab.

AMISOM was created by the African Union Peace and Security Council on 19 January 2007. The mission was authorized by the United Nations Security Council through United Nations Security Council Resolution 1744. Initially, AMISOM was mandated to last for six months, but its mandate has been extended multiple times due to the ongoing conflict in Somalia.
